Read the Bible With Us

The Method

This is a simple method of engaging with the Bible that anyone can practice:

SScripture – Read the Scripture slowly 2-3x times, reading out loud is even better

O - Observations – List what you observe about the passage

  • What is weird, strange, or unique?

  • Who are the characters and what are they doing?

  • Are there any words or ideas that get repeated?

  • What does this passage tell us about God?

A - Applications – Consider how the passage applies to your life, changes, or shapes it

  • Does this passage correct anything in your life?

  • Does this passage give you something to imitate?

  • How would your thinking and feelings change if this is true?

P - Prayer – Pray the passage, especially pray based on the applications

Study Tips

  • Don’t be afraid to ask “silly” questions or admit when things are confusing – That’s part of engaging with the passage

  • Don’t assume the passage has a hidden meaning only scholars can find – Most texts have very straightforward meanings that anyone can grasp

  • If you get stuck go back to the basics of “who – what – where – when – why” – Who are the characters? What are they doing? Where is this taking place? When in Jesus’ ministry? Why is this passage here?

  • The goal isn’t finishing a quiz or test, it’s engaging with God – Any day you spend time in the Word and pray it’s another step forward in your relationship with God

  • Not every day of study will change your life, but the pattern will – We don’t remember most meals we eat, but they all sustain us for another day or week. Similarly we may not remember every time of study and prayer, but they will sustain us and God will change us over time.
